The Factors of Depression in Teenagers

The rapid development of the world encourages everybody to compete, so that makes everybody expected to be able to do something well. In fact, everyone can not do it, even many who do fail. Failure causes disappointment for some people that leads to depression. Depression can be experienced by anyone without knowing age, gender or social status. Currently, depression is one of the major serious behavioral problems among teenagers. The depression in teenagers can be caused by several factors, such as genetic, biological and enviromental factors.
First of all, genetic factor is one of the factors that cause depression for teenagers. Depression may occur in families with historical occurance, which has been proven in studies by researchers over the past decade. In fact, between 20 percent and 50 percent of children and adolescents who have depression also have a family history of depression (Emedtv, 2007). This fact has lead researchers into conclusion that genetics play roles in the likelihood of one's depression occurance.
The second factor that causes depression in teenagers is biological factors. it includes, both physical and emotional changes. The human body, with its enormous network of neurotransmitters, introduces a lot of anatomical, physiological and psychological changes during adolescence (All-on-Depression, 2009). These changes, started with increase in hormones and marked by puberty in both boys and girls. Next, it will be trigger for mood swings and anger, which usually resulting in negative emotions. It happens because teenagers are still learning how to cope with everyday issues and problems, finding out who they are and where they fit in the world. Sometimes teenagers are not able to understand these changes well, and this becomes another factors of teen depression.
In addition to genetic and biological, environmental factor is the last factor that causes of teen depression. Environment is the most influential factor for teenagers, it is the place for teenager to do social interactions. It generally, can be divided into two major parts. First family environmental as the smallest environment, which functions as a gathering and sharing place for family members. In fact, the contrast happened and the family does not function as it should. The parents are busy with their activity, so the children be neglected. They do not receive attention and affection from the parents. This may lead them to feel that they can not turn to parents for help and becomes depressed. The second environment is social environment, such as school and neighbourhood. In this environment, teens are faced with a variety of activities. These activities will encourage teens to compete and work hard to get maximum results. In fact, the result obtained are not as expected and many teens become depressed of it.
In conclusion, genetic, biological and environmental factor are only few examples that may cause depression in teenagers. However, the most important thing is how to deal with the depression, because depression is a part of human life. Support from family and friends, will make the teenagers learn to cope with the stress in the face of competition in the world.
